Hello Mugshooters!

We have been making huge strides with the Daily Mugshot website and although you may have not seen a lot of the changes on your end, we really ramped things up behind the scenes. A quick overview of what's been done:

- Ruby: upgraded from 1.8.4 to 1.8.7

- Rails: upgraded from 2.0.2 to 2.3.8

- Exceptional: this plugin helps us track errors in the web application so we can get them fixed as soon as possible.

While these updates may seem meaningless to many of you, they have been paramount in our ability to put out more meaningful updates such as the Twitter upgrade :) That's right, the Twitter integration is now available again! You can setup your twitter account now by visiting http://www.dailymugshot.com/publish#twitter.

With these robust updates we hope to be cranking out lots of new functionality so send in your ideas! You can expect the Facebook integration to be coming out soon too :)

Thank you all for your loyalty and sticking with us! I know it's been a long time, but now we're back in action :)

Finally! A Workaround.

Hello Mugshotters!

I want to extend my apologies to those of you who loyally came to our site every day only to wake up one morning finding that your computer would no longer connect to your webcam. Well as it turns out there appears to be a compatibility issue with the latest version of Flash for Mac OS X. The solution (as I have tested) is to downgrade your Flash. I will guide you through the steps in this post.

If you are experiencing the problem as described above, and fiddling with the Flash settings hasn't solved the problem, you are likely running Flash 10.1.102.64 (or 10.1.103.19 for Chrome). You can verify the version of Flash you are using by visiting http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/. What you want to be running is Flash 10.1.85.3. So here we go:

1. Download the flash uninstaller here: Flash Uninstaller.

2. Run the uninstaller.

3. Download the Flash 10.1.85.3 installer here: Flash 10.1.85.3

4. Open or restart Safari.

5. Visit http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/ to verify that you are running 10.1.85.3

6. Verify that flash has access to your camera.

7. Verify that flash is accessing the proper camera.

8. Take your mugshot :)

iSight Bug Update

I just got off the phone with Apple, and they seem to be completely oblivious to this problem. If you are having this issue please go through the following steps to get Apple to fix this problem:

1. Call Apple here and walk them through the issue.

2. Leave feedback for Apple here.

Interim Solution for Snow Leopard Bug

While the built in iSight is giving problems with the new Snow Leopard, it seems that external iSights still work. So if you have an external webcam kicking around, give that a shot until Apple's next update.

iSight, Flash, and Snow Leopard

Hello Mugshotters,

Unfortunately it looks like the latest release of Snow Leopard (10.6.5) has some compatibility issues allowing Flash to access the iSight camera on older machines. This is not a DMS bug. You will notice that it will not work on any website that tries to access your iSight camera. You can verify this by visiting http://testwebcam.com/ .

If you are victim of this bug, please contact Apple. The more pressure we put on them the sooner they will fix the problem.

Allowing Your Webcam In Firefox For Mac

It seems that various versions of Firefox (including 3.6.12) are not letting users allow access to their webcams.

The common case scenario is that you will go to take your mugshot and be presented with a dialog box requesting permission to access your webcam. When you go to click "Allow" nothing happens. In fact, the dialog box is completely frozen and clicking anywhere in the box will do nothing. Now you are banging your head on the table wondering why Mozilla would ask you questions if they don't want to hear the answer!

Well there happens to be a solution. It turns out that flash permissions are global to your system. That means that if you tell flash to always allow permission to www.dailymugshot.com, it will, regardless of what browser you are using. So here's what to do:

1. Open your favorite non-Firfox browser (Chrome, Safari, etc.)

2. Go to www.dailymugshot.com/new_pic

3. Right click (or ctrl-click) on the dialog box and select "settings".

4. Make sure that the settings are set to "Allow" and "Remember"

5. Reload www.dailymugshot.com/new_pic in Firefox and everything should work!

Allowing Your Webcam In Chrome For Mac

Hey team,

This is for all you Macintosh Chrome users who are wondering why your browser suddenly stopped letting you use your webcam. The answer is... I don't know. BUT! I did find some interesting information.

Chrome is not using the latest release of flash (10.1.102.64). Instead it is using a newer version (10.1.103.19)! Many of the Flash updates are geared towards improving the security of your web viewing experience so it is often recommended that you always upgrade. Unfortunately, this recent upgrade mandated to us from Google Chrome is not very DMS friendly. So here is what you need to do:

1. Open Chrome

2. Enter "chrome://plugins/" into the address bar and hit return

3. Click "Details" on the right

4. Scroll down to "Flash" and you should see 2 versions there.

5. Make sure version 10.1.103.19 is disabled

6. Once you have disabled version 10.1.103.19 it will then default to your system version. If your system version is not 10.1.85.3 Flash may still not be able to access your camera. If this is the case, please follow my instruction here to downgrade Flash.

7. Reload Chrome and visit http://www.dailymugshot.com/new_pic and you should be golden!

Dear DMS world, it's been a while. Just about 2 years it appears. It's nice to see you again :)

We have a new team! Fuzz Productions is now powering updates and improvements to the site and we look forward to moving DMS forward in every way we can. Your thoughts and suggestions are always welcome and they help us focus on what the community is looking for as a whole and what we should be spending our time improving and updating.

I know, I know, the Facebook and Twitter plugins have been down for a while now. Unfortunately, DMS went through a long stretch of just being stagnant (about 2 years) and while the rest of the cyber world continued to update and improve DMS more or less stayed in the same place... being awesome, but not getting awesomer. In short, Facebook and Twitter updated their plugin interfaces and DMS needs a lot of updating before we can re-implement these plugins. But through thick or thin, we'll get there.

Right now it appears that browser updates are out to get us. First it started with Firefox not letting users allow camera access to Flash, then a recent Chrome update stopped showing the video camera, and now it looks like Safari for Snow Leopard also is not working. While our new iPhone app is out, we are taking a huge hit from the browser world. My mission today is to stop taking this abuse and start fighting back. In the mean time... try Opera?

365 Mugshots!?

Wow. 365 Mugshots. I can't believe it! I guess in a way that makes today DMS's 1st birthday. (Not that my consistency is 100% :p ) To everyone involved, thank you so much. And to the awesome DMSers out there, thank you so much. Getting to work on this project is a blessing.

Cloudfront

Switching us over to Amazon's Cloudfront CDN. Insanely easy. Took under an hour, and that included eating some quinoa. The site's been a bit slow the last few days and I'm not sure why yet, but I think it might have had something to do with S3, so lets see if Cloudfront helps.

Speeding up Browse and iPhone App

Hey DMSers,

Spent most of today (Sunday) working on optimizing the browsing page. It loads about 11 times faster now. :)

Also, the new iPhone update came out today! So make sure to upgrade. This fixes an important bug that caused connection issues with 1.0.

Building a Proper Foundation

So in about 10 days we have a lot of new users!! Hundreds actually. I'm now in the process of building out the site's infrastructure (more servers, more elves, etc...), so hopefully as the site grows everything stays happy.

Moving Forward

It's been just over one month since the last post. So much has happened. Firstly, the tech stuff:

Favorites are complete. You can designate favorites and find them easily in the gallery via filters.
Stats complete. Next to each mugshow you can see interesting stats
Invites Complete. Its now super easy to invite your friends using your webmail address book.

Secondly, for the community:

The site was recently featured in a few blogs, and consequently the site has seen its first bit of momentum (over 100 new faces). Its fantastic to see new faces, and its a perfect way to see where the system bottlenecks are, so I can fix. DMS'ers are great with feedback, and are so helpful with feature requests and bug reports.
While only a week or so into the site going live, there are over 1000 mugshots taken.

Features Going forward:

Ability to download your images for personal use.
Ability to enter captions for each mugshot, around 20 characters. ?These can be seen in mugshow
Optional email reminders

So all in all a healthy update, and of course I plan to keep at it. Thank you all for the feedback, support, and most of all for using the site and having fun!

Been just under a month since the last post. Lots going on!!

Totally new Take Pic code. MUCH faster and robust. Nick is amazing.
Spent this weekend and last under DMS's hood optimizing. Faster, and more scalable.

As you can see, a lot of the major changes happened with the help of others. Thank you all so much! Features to come shortly:

Pagination in browse area and Sort-By options
Friends designations, making it easier to keep tabs on those you care about

And to all the DMSers giving feedback, thank you so much! It really (really) helps.

Getting There...

Status: There are maybe 20 regular users. Tiny bugs and tweaks being ironed out. As I said before the Reminder is the key to the success of this project, so there is some intense work going on in this department. Details to come in a few weeks when we release the work. Slowly, the user flow is being improved. Most tweaks people do not even notice. There were significant improvements in the widget. Nick is a force to be reckoned with.

Peer Invites

Starting yesterday, all users got some peer invites. Already there are two users whom I've never met! Shortly I'll implement a refresh strategy to give users more invites when they run out. Its fantastic to see this spreading (however slowly) on its own.
